Review by Adam Rayner
These Morel passives were made in answer to those who wanted to use their fabulous quality active-system-intended Supremo drivers but didn’t really want to stretch their huge power handling capabilities. This is a great compliment to their efficiency as the Supremo speakers rocked and throbbed with great beauty even under mere headunit power drive. However, these passives are a bit of a pain in the neck to identify the terminals upon them. Like when you might have to re-attach cables or need to disconnect a speaker to hear just the other one for diagnostic purposes, as once you have screwed the wire down onto its gold plated screw connector, it lies directly above the actual label written beneath as to what the position is for. As these are able to be used with four channels of amplification or else two but with four speaker wires – a method known as bi-wiring or bi-amping, both of which are said to offer benefits in performance – it can be a bit confusing. (The tweeter connects on the same side as the resistor bank) The Accuset system can be used with this set of passives and that enables the user to set the passives slopes and attenuation levels by ear, actually in their car. A feature not supported or emulated by any other speaker maker. There are plenty of speaker systems with adjustable passives, but these are usually just mere jumpers, or else a huge unwieldy box that needs to be installed somewhere.
The components are all top quality and the inductor coil is bloody huge, meaning the speakers can be sent a lot of bass energy and you can hear it on the drivers, A lot of lows get past and are not truncated nor lessened by what’s known as saturation, when a passive coil cannot cope with all the watts and starts to sound congested in the low end. These are effortless.
A very upmarket set of passives that would not be out of place inside a very posh home hifi speaker to look at the quality of the bits it is made of, as well as offering a seamless and very high power passive option for the true cognoscenti at the high end. The sort of passives you can expect to see a pair of very posh amps connected to, just to run one set of two-ways.
