My very first forays into car audio entailed getting hold of wire and fuses and stuff that wasn’t yet on the UK market to fuse up big power hungry arrays of 12V amplifiers. That was a fierce long time ago and all you could get was the best and most costly. The power wires and bits cost me six hundred pounds at trade! (Mind you it was a one over gauge and five amplifier set up.) And while it’s fun to use jewellery-grade wiring accessories and bling up your install, for many years now there have been pretty but much less costly options available too.
This set from Armageddon has a chunk of both camps. Not only does it arrive in a box with a nice handle and eight windows to peer through, but the cables are pretty and the fuse stuff thingies are all see through – even their bases.
OK, so you are not going to get collet fixing and full waterproofedness but in honesty, unless you are a poor installer, this set’s main fuseholder can be as water safe as any by careful placement in the engine bay. The cable is not especially heavy in the metal rope amount versus the costly brands and yet looks plenty meaty enough for the purpose.
Especially impressive was how the makers had branded up the cable for power and speaker with the Armageddon name and had also had it cast in relief on the RCA plugs on the signal wire. This last is also a bit blingy, with the words ‘High Quality Balanced Audio’ printed upon it, going to ‘Y’ shaped dividers at the end to give the red and white left/rightness of it all.
The baggie of bits is fabulously comprehensive and with a bit of actual knowledge and the right tools, represents a very thoughtful shop at the accessories counter. This is usually the bit that gets left out. No prizes for pretties versus the mad end stuff but a real challenger to the regular affordable fare and a well thought out boon to the new install maker. Not just for being well thought out but mainly for being such an amazing price for the amount you get, as well as it including a usefully credible-quality RCA cable and even the loom protector split sheathing stuff for use under the bonnet.
A lovely complement to the Armageddon range which is clearly the product of experience in the stuff we love most. The only bizarre thing is for the apocalyptically-named brand is that the prices mean that a system won’t take you until the end of the world to pay off.
