Editor Review : Contigo Westloop 100% Leak-Proof Insulated Flask
I saw the Newton Products stand at Gadget Show Live. They had some really cool shizzle. Find it all here, by the way: link Stuff like Sonic Screwdrivers to really boss your TV setand the best looking sealed drinks flasks I ever saw. I asked if I could nick one at cost if I wrote it up? The boss, a dude with a really cool name (bloke was called Adam) said ‘yes’ and I have been using it ever since.
How Well Does It Work?
The sip-sealer thingy on a Contigo flask is WAY more advanced than the slit-polymer-chod sip-cup that is used for babies. Those, you have to suckle on. The Contigo flask, though, is a cunning assembly of about eight different precision bits to make a sprung, button-controlled sealer-sip-top for what is a real vacuum flask.
However, it IS a wide-mouthed flask – the ancient glass Thermos for tea, tended to have a narrow neck to keep the heat in the better and they used to have a cork stopper! This means more edge-length for heat transference and the thermodynamics while good, are really only about the medium-term as after all, this is really a one-big-hit coffee flask! Because it is steel, the heat can and does conduct up from inside and out of the top edge and after filling, the bottom part of the flask can feel ambient temperature but the bit around the top under the stopper is warm to the touch.
That said, the damn thing is deadly! I was WARNED, in person and in print and even joked about how it was not an ‘IF’ but a ‘WHEN’ I burned my mouth.
And fool, I did. Quite badly and had to heal for two days before I could make the video. For the facts are, that if you boil a kettle or make coffee in a classic Moka Pot, it’ll be too hot to drink straight off and you wait a minute or so before taking a swig However, the warnings about DO NOT PUT BOILING LIQUIDS in your flask are for frigging real. This not going to go well&;
So, what does this eejit do? Yes, I burned my mouth. Which heals fast but truly, for your first bit anyway, until you know it is cool enough to sip, maybe decant a bit and drink from a smaller cup -like an Espresso glass f’rinstance. That advice is no use for driving with, of course, as the flask sits nicely in any cup holder worthy of the name. But please for the love of burned tongues and palates, do not put the top on and slurp like the bloke in the video of theirs I didn’t post, which shows him getting clinical buccal scalding!
Here’s a little video clip of me, full of caffeine, reviewing the Contigo flask from Newton products.
I love it by the wayas it works exactly as described and is better than most others out there, Mind you, versus a fiver or so at the supermarket for an inferior one, that’s merely a bit insulated, the Contigo is a much more expensive thing for a much, much higher performance. So, yes, it IS expensive but it’s bloody brilliant.
Just PLEASE don’t burn your mouth.
NB, price has risen to £27.00 since filming and Gadget Show Live.
