EDGAR’S ADDS CHROME! – DUMFRIES’ CAR CULTURE HUB!
Inside the cavernous temples of retail, Like Bluewater in Kent, You can find old-fashioned sweet shops. The staff wear cutesy aprons, the shelving and counters are all quaint and made of wood. And the great big ‘oh my gosh!’ deal is that they sell classic sweets from jars, by weight in little paper bags. “A quarter of sherbet pips please and two ounces of candy peanuts…” These shops (always in the little specialist retail unit section) are aimed at the middle aged shopper, who will marvel and reminisce back to when they were kids. Because nobody runs the sweet shops like that any more. Everything is prepackaged. But in Dumfries it is not like that. For that is where Edgar’s newsagents (and filled rolls) can be found and they are one of the reasons that suppliers like Gibbs & Buchanan’s have remained in business selling sweets in big bulk jars for shops, for those trendy units to rediscover, because they never stopped.
I have always loved families and couples in car audio, as it proves that being fanatical about your ride and the sounds inside it, is not exclusive to actually forming normal relationships! Just like fishing, cars and car audio are generally dominated by blokes. That said, I could list you a small horde of fabulous women, from The Garage’s Danielle (about to have her first baby..aaahh!) to Michelle Westby, who drives in the live action arena show of the Fast & The Furious, to the awesome cookie Fiona Durward-Brown, who is a nurse, a Supermama and is a demon on the road. I have worked with Michelle and I am proper mates with Danielle and Fiona… Scots lass Liz Houston is also more automotive than me and she is awesome.
Ian and his dad are two blokes that I have admired for ever. I took some pictures of them sat in the back of the van that Ian has one of the finest sound systems in the world installed into, at a sound off. We have been mates ever since… I follow the antics within the shop on Facebook. I have marvelled at the great wall of XL Cheese crisp boxes that appears every Christmas. I have even enjoyed a care parcel of naughty sweeties, all labelled in Scots, like “SOOR PLOOMS”. And boy oh boy have I watched that man wash his Jeep and his van.
Because Ian likes to enter automotive competitions. From a sound system so beautiful, it can give you goosebumps, To concourse d’elégance contests and he actually enjoys the detailing process. What for you is a pain in the arse, for him is entertaining activity to share on Facebook. “Here is the Mighty Jeep Commander covered in snow foam!”
And now, through a combination of geography and burning enthusiasm, the business now should be called, “Edgar’s Newsagents (and filled rolls) AND CAR DETAILING!” because as well as the amazing selection of motoring magazine titles, that folks come from afar to collect, knowing THIS newsagents’ is run by a vehicle nutter, Edgar’s is now a major stockist of CHROME NORTH WEST CAR CLEANING PRODUCTS.
Here is what their announcement said:
