The UK has for ever followed the USA in matters cultural, be it Rock n’Roll or hanging some poor kid’s trainers from a bloody phone wire to prove your crew is the hardest. GAH! And we are doing it again, with ruddy Halloween going from a gentle thing on the telly to a contributor to youth diabetes.
But not all the USA’s ‘˜things’ really translate and yet we don’t care, we nick ‘˜em anyway! The reason the Americans call it ‘˜The Holiday Season’ is that they have a HUGE event on the last Thursday of November, that means everybody wants to be at home with their families for a traditional meal of Turkey. Sounds familiar?
Here’s what Wikipedia says about American Thanksgiving: ‘In the United States, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition is commonly, but not universally, traced to a sparsely documented 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts. The 1621 Plymouth feast and thanksgiving was prompted by a good harvest. Pilgrims and Puritans who began emigrating from England in the 1620s and 1630s carried the tradition of Days of Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving with them to New England.’
So what in heck IS ‘˜Black Friday’? And why does it exist? Well, after that mad effort to get to the folks for dinner, a massive number of Americans would take the following day, Friday, off. Having the paycheck needed for Christmas gifts just remitted, serious shopping ensued. Competition for these shoppers became intense. So intense that businesses over here in Europe decided to get onboard and use it as an excuse to bring the post-Christmas ‘˜Sales’ forward. We have seem fights over TV sets in ASDA (our brand for Wal-Mart, for my US readers) that were way past unseemly!
JL Audio and Dynamat are premium top quality products, both paid the ultimate accolade of having been counterfeited! As such, they do not get ‘˜shagged out’ or generally participate in that ‘˜race to zero’ that results in such things as five disposable gas lighters for a pound and no mid-priced ones before Dunhill! No, they make the best they can and get used as examples to follow and emulate. I once saw a JL Audio amp used as a quality target in an Alpine trade presentation.
