Kenwood Apple CarPlay for Volkswagen

CarPlay by Apple and Android Auto by well, everyone else (but-mostly-Samsung-if-we-are-honest) signalled the death of the MirrorLink Consortium’s efforts to make in-car apps and an interface that was safe to translate an app from use on your phone, to use in the car. Those two new translations of digital ecosystems for car display and use, quashed ‘˜em. And now, we can see what that Grand Future that was predicted, has meant, for it is here.

The new CarPlay equipped ordnance that Kenwood has designed and specified for the desirable and ultracult VW vans (and other models, too, of course, but the video is a vaaaan!) is really deeply embedded into the workings of the vehicle. In one direction the system has to swag some data for use on the Kenwood’s screen to tell you about the heating and in the other direction, it has to feed data from the onboard Garmin navigation, to the middle-binnacle tft display that so many modern cars have. This is a secondary navigation prompt and is central in the instrument cluster.
