Rayner In Soft Focus..
So, the new trade magazine owners changed the name from Mobile Electronics News, to Vehicle Electronics Professional and I was invited to dinner at the posh awards do at the National Motorcycle Museum on the same roundabout as the NEC in Birmingham last night. Thanks guys! It was gripping on many levels. Unlike a year or errm seven back, when, after a while presenting the awards, I had lost my gig to some fellow off the telly we didn’t really know but the publisher had taken a shine to (well, I was just jealous, really) I was really not too sad at all to lose the job to Pollyanna Woodward of Gadget Show fame.
Yes, her mum only thought she had a ‘˜proper job’ from about a year in to her being a powerhouse presenter in the fabled tech TV offering Her ‘˜screen test’ was not to see if the camera loved her while she played with a Nerf submachine pistol no it was off-road Segway racing with Jason Bradbury!
Bless her, in doing the presentation and telling us about this, she made reference to the unsafe nature of that being her first ever try on a Segway and making some comment about cliffs being dangerous. It was dark humour but not ONE of the audience got the macabre significance of her joke.
Fact is, the millionaire inventor of the device, was troubled and used one and a cliff to take his own life very sad.
Pollyanna meanwhile doesn’t take a change of clothes to said screen test and yet has to fill up at her car at a petrol station on the way homecovered in pooey mud. Nice.
Anyway, despite being awesome the time I was in the same waiting area at Radio Two as Kylie Minogue (who had arrived through the doors singing along to the radio station feed on the ceiling speakersoh BE STILL my heart!!) and NOT asking for her picture I figured that after sitting at the same dinner table and nagging the poor girl, Pollyanna, if not Kylie, might be inured enough to ask nicely for a selfie picture. I had offers of snappery help but wanted that Selfie Hithence soft focus on front cam of my iPod, under a dirty plastic cover.
I wasn’t like going into soft focus in real life. Honestmuch.
All I can say is that my Facebook feed has never gone so POW and NEVER supplied a news story back to the magazine like this before! At time of writing, I have sixty-three likes and sixteen comments although some is me
But the best line was from Guru, on his own wall about the awards, to do with my not presenting it.
‘As Harry Hill would say….Adam’s witty banter or Pollyanna’s charm? FIGHT!’
