T-20/EMMA Round 3/Midbass Open Day
In a unique turn of events, the EMMA UK sound off Round Three was held at the Midbass Open Day. Well, it kinda WAS the open day, as they simply fixed up a company shop for the day and had a seriously quality burger van show up. Keenly priced versus normal show rates, too!
But the significance of the T-20 event being appended to the same day has taken a little while to sink in. It didn’t have the character of the green field in Oxfordshire, but it also had proper hard standing throughout and nicely defined areas, close to each other, with way more room than the folks at Auto Audio, and more like the Car Audio & Security open events as these are both the other places that have held full sound offsoh and John Kleis in Reading
But the REALLY coolest and also most initially frustrating part of the day, was the Enclosure Contest run by Vibe, with £600 valuta of shopping as prizes. £300 for first, £200 for second and £100 for third. It was simple. They had a car, an amp and a Black Death fifteen inch woofer with two 2 Ohm voice coils. There were limitations to maximum box size but apart form that, they were not really restricted.
No fewer than fifteen boxes were submitted and Astra Aza even bought and fitted a tow bar to his Golf, so he could trail a pile of enclosures to the contest. Here’s some being carried by Wonky Jon Clements and chums
And having sunk in, the point is, that is was a PERSONAL event. Not Turbo Nutter Bastard and Modded Man, but US. The Sound Off Community. As such, it allowed certain folks to dare to come and see what was going on, who might NEVER struggle off to Trax and pay big time for the privilege. One such was a bloke who admitted to me that he had started reading my stuff in Max Power (No one alive recalls Car Stereo & Security or Car HiFi magazines I was in both) and then Fast Car and now Talk Audio. I was touched. Also, a dude I have spoken to on the forum and always seemed helpful and intelligent, known as ‘˜greeef’ on the Talk Audio forum boards, came to his first ever sound off, ever! I was delighted to meet him and he and his girl and her chum, all gave great video and made their own segment of the video below.
Here’s the greef party!

Yes that IS Ashley Booth of Alpine, in the VIBE hearse, with a bass sensor strapped to his head!
For the thing is, Midbass were ready to get down and dirty with the competitors and ‘˜Take it out and measure it’ as AudioControl always said. I was plain wrong about the hearse hitting a one sixty. But it did register over 1 hundred and fifty-five decibels and that is astonishing.
The enclosure contest got held up because a tiny headunit 12V power supply had a conniption fit. The battle wagon had to be disconnected from the big power supply, as gert hench BOOMPH signals or ‘˜thumps’ were coming through the signal feeds and then mains power reached the speaker wires and FIZTT! Two evaporated voice coils. The boss himself went and got a new subwoofer. The amp was changed as well as the headunit and before long, the rig was running and boxes were tested.
We found bandpassers were good but a classic PA style folded horn was the best at around 145dBimpressive. But seeing Carl Venables, Guv’Nor, literally with his sleeves rolled up, messing about with bass boxes and grinning a lot, was cool.
As ever these days, the ESPL is run by Lea with Rose to assist
